All-Ireland MFC: Mayo goals sink Tipp

August 04, 2009
Mayo 3-10 Tipperary 1-8 Last year's beaten All-Ireland finalists Mayo proved much too strong for Tipperary in yesterday's ESB All-Ireland MFC quarter-final at O'Connor Park, Tullamore. First half goals from Alex Corduff and Darren Coen, and another from Cillian O'Connor midway through the second half, paved the way for a comfortable victory for the Westerners, who will now face either Dublin or Down for a place in the All-Ireland final. Ray Dempsey's side led by 2-4 to 1-2 at half-time with their goals coming in the 11th and 20th minutes. The goals from Corduff and Coen had helped them to a 2-2 to 0-1 lead before Eddie Kendrick's 23rd minute goal handed Tipperary a lifeline. The winners extended their advantage on the restart thanks to scores from Jack McDonnell and Cillian O'Connor. Johnny McMahon clawed back a couple of points from frees for David Power's Tipp side before Cillian O'Connor put the result beyond doubt with Mayo's third major 13 minutes from the end.
