Connacht MFC: Walsh rescues Mayo
July 20, 2009
A last-gasp Aidan Walsh free salvaged a draw for Mayo against Roscommon in yesterday's ESB Connacht MFC final at Pearse Stadium.
Mayo..1-5
Roscommon0-8
Neither side played particularly well in what was a poor encounter, but will have a chance to redeem themselves in next weekend's replay. That said, Roscommon were by far the better team and but for the fact that they registered 15 wides, would have won comfortably.
Ten of those wides came in the first half, at the end of which they trailed by 0-5 to 1-3, despite having played with the wind. Points from Ciaran Murtagh, Cathal Shine and Niall Kilroy had handed the Rossies the early initiative before their lead was wiped out by Cillian O'Connor's fisted goal in the 20th minute.
Ray Dempsey's Mayo managed just two points with the wind to their backs in the second half, with Danny Kirby scoring the first of those four minutes in. Scores from Niall Kilroy and Colin Compton had Roscommon in front with six minutes remaining, but they couldn't put Mayo away and paid the price when Walsh levelled in injury-time.
