Leinster MFC: Sweeney rescues Dubs

July 13, 2009
Dublin and Kildare must replay their ESB Leinster MFC final after Gary Sweeney's injury-time point salvaged a draw for the Metropolitans at Croke Park. Dublin..1-10 Kildare.1-10 Defeat would have been a disaster for Dublin after they had led by six points at one stage, but Sweeney's 62nd minute equaliser gives them a second bite at the cherry next Saturday. Brian Murphy's Kildare side opened the scoring through midfielder Tomas Moolick before Dublin responded with points from Darragh Stapleton, Sweeney and team captain Colm Carr. Carr then flicked a Kevin O'Brien free to the net to put Dublin firmly in the driving seat after a quarter of an hour. Dublin extended their advantage to six points before a cool finish from Padraig Fogarty left the Lilywhites just three points adrift at the interval, 1-3 to 1-6. The impressive Fogarty hit three points on the restart to bring Kildare level after 42 minutes and it was nip and tuck until it looked as though Darroch Mulhall's free on the hour mark had given Kildare victory. But Dublin refused to accept defeat with Sweeney's late equaliser sending the final to a replay.
