Lynch and Mullane scoop monthly awards

Cork's Anthony Lynch
Cork footballer Anthony Lynch and Waterford hurling star John Mullane have been named as the Opel/GPA Players of the Month for June. The awards recognise the outstanding contribution both players made to their county's performances in the championship last month. The long-serving Lynch, who missed last Sunday's Munster SFC final against Limerick through injury, produced a man of the match performance in Cork's semi-final replay win over Kerry, while Mullane hit 0-6 in Waterford's Munster SHC semi-final replay victory over Limerick. Chairman of the football selection committee Martin McHugh said: "To deliver one great performance marking a player of Colm Cooper's ability is a great achievement; to do it twice in a week is the sign of a truly outstanding defender and as a result Cork's Anthony Lynch is a most worthy recipient of the June Opel Gaelic Player of the month award for football." Chairman of the hurling selection committee Donal O'Grady said: "John Mullane delivered an outstanding display of both power and finesse in the Munster semi-final replay against Limerick. "But what was most appealing to me in both the drawn game and the replay was Mullane's passion for his county and his hurling, something which should be celebrated. His fellow players have recognised this and he is a worthy winner of the Opel Gaelic Player hurling award for June."
