Connacht MFC: Mayo romp home

June 28, 2009
Mayo 2-13 Galway 1-7 Last year's beaten All-Ireland finalists Mayo produced an outstanding display to overwhelm Galway in Sunday's ESB Connacht MFC semi-final at Markievicz Park. Ray Dempsey's side only led by three points, 0-7 to 0-4, at the break, but they never looked back after Cillian O'Connor's stunning goal five minutes into the second half. Galway captain Ronan Steede pulled back a goal in the 48th minute, but Mayo remained in the driving seat and sealed an emphatic win thanks to a second goal from substitute John Carney with five minutes remaining. Mayo full forward Aidan Walsh scored four points in the first half, while centre forward Darren Coen scored two and Brian Ruttledge had another. But they really turned on the style after the break when a Patrick Sweeney point sparked them to life and they hit an unanswered 1-4 in a blistering six-minute spell to end the game as a contest and ensure a final date with Roscommon.
