Munster MHC: Drake rescues replay for Rebels

June 25, 2009
Cork 5-17 Tipperary 5-17 Extra-time failed to separate old rivals Cork and Tipperary in this cracking ESB Munster MHC semi-final at Pairc Ui Chaoimh last night. The Premier County were denied victory in normal time by a goal from Cork substitute Brian Hartnett, and it was a similar story at the end of extra-time when David Drake held his nerve to slot over the equaliser from a '65. Tipp were the better team in the first half of normal time, but James Coughlan's 23rd minute goal saw them trail by 1-6 to 1-7 at the interval. Another goal by Eoin O'Sullivan three minutes after the resumption, followed by a point from Paul Haughney, gave the home side a five-point lead. But inspired by a Brian Stapleton goal, Tipp fought back and forged two points clear thanks to a John O'Dwyer goal. Three late points looked to have given the Premier boys the win before Cork sub Harnett forced extra-time (2-15 to 3-12) with a goal four minutes into injury-time. Aided by majors from David Butler and David Collins, Tipp surged into a 4-17 to 3-12 lead in extra-time before Cork responded with similar scores from Hartnett and Dean Brosnan. O'Dwyer looked to have won it for Tipp when he found the net to make it 5-17 to 5-16, but Drake ensured a replay for the Rebels.
