MFC: Armagh send champions packing
June 01, 2009
Armagh caused something of a surprise in the Ulster minor football championship when they defeated All-Ireland champions Tyrone by 2-8 to 1-9 at Clones.
Robbie Tasker was the hero of the hour for the Orchard County as his two goals proved decisive in a tight encounter that could have gone either way.
Tasker scored both goals from the penalty spot, the first of which came in the 11th minute when Conor King was fouled by Thomas Canavan.
Armagh went in at the break leading by 1-3 to 0-3 but Tyrone made a perfect start to the second half when Shane McGuigan fired past Niall Morgan to bring them right back into the game.
However, Armagh regained control when King was once again fouled in the penalty area, this time by Shane McGarrity and Tasker converted his second goal.
Further points from Eugene McVerry and Gavin McPartland helped seal the victory of the Orchard County progress to the semi final.
