Connacht MFC: Galway scrape win over Sligo

May 17, 2009
Substitute Cathal Sweeney's goal midway through the second half proved decisive as Galway edged out Sligo by 1-5 to 0-7 in this ESB Connacht MFC first round clash at Tuam Stadium. David Maye, who top-scored for Sligo with 0-5, had a late chance to force extra-time, but his free from 55 metres drifted wide of the target. Sligo led by 0-5 to 0-2 at half-time, and went four clear when Maye pointed immediately after the restart. But when twins Patrick and Cathal Sweeney combined to goal in the 43rd minute, Gerry Fahy's side took the lead for the first time. The Tribesmen never looked back after that, with Sligo only managing to add one further point from Maye with four minutes remaining.
