Munster MFC: Tipp shock Rebels

May 14, 2009
Tipperary caused a major surprise last night when they recorded an extra-time victory over Cork in the ESB Munster MFC semi-final at Pairc Ui Chaoimh. Tipperary 0-13 Cork 0-10 The visitors recovered from losing a five-point lead in the second half of normal time to shock Mick Slocum's much-fancied Cork side. Tipp set out their stall early on and raced into a 0-6 to 0-0 lead after 26 minutes. The impressive Billy Hewitt accounted for three of their early points, but Cork recovered somewhat late in the half to trail by 0-2 to 0-6 at the interval. Though Brian Hogan got the first point of the second half to reduce the deficit to three, Tipp replied with points from Roger Peters, Ross McGrath and Thomas Hill to open up a 0-8 to 0-3 lead. However, Cork - who survived a missed penalty by Ross McGrath in the 53rd minute - fought back and Dean Brosnan equalised to force extra-time. But three unanswered points from McGrath in the first period of extra-time gave Tipp a 0-12 to 0-9 lead, and while Ger Minihane replied for Cork, substitute Johnny McMahon had the final say for the Premier County.
