GPA awards for McCrabbe and Coughlan

May 12, 2009
Dublin hurler Alan McCrabbe and Tipperary footballer Hugh Coughlan have been named as the Opel/GPA Players of the Month. Their awards recognise the outstanding contribution both players made to their county's performances in the 2009 National Football and Hurling Leagues. Coughlan's displays at centre back were a key factor in Tipperary's stunning NFL Division 3 success according to the newly-appointed chairman of the Opel/GPA Selection Committee Martin McHugh. "Hugh was consistently solid through Tipp's league campaign and was part of a very strong spine. Tipperary's success in claiming the title and promotion to Division 2 has, unsurprisingly, struck a chord with players who have voted to honour Hugh's achievements throughout the league,' the former Donegal star said. Commenting on McCrabbe's selection as the hurling winner, Donal O'Grady, chairman of the Opel/GPA Hurling Selection Committee said: "Although Alan was injured for the clash with Kilkenny, he was Dublin's top scorer during their very consistent league campaign notching up a very impressive 1-50. Operating between the half-forward line and midfield, McCrabbe has become very central to Dublin's performances and has a big summer ahead of him." GPA chief executive Dessie Farrell said: "The unique honour of being recognised by fellow hurlers and footballers is special for players and the success of the Opel/Gaelic Players Awards reflects the standing of this important scheme among the playing body. I wish our new chairmen, selection panels and the players the very best with this year's scheme." Aislinn Connolly of Opel Ireland commented: "After four successful years, Opel Ireland is delighted to once again support the players of Gaelic games, through the Opel GPA Awards. Players of the calibre of Alan and Hugh have rightly been recognised for their performances in the National Leagues - it's a great reflection on the players, their clubs and their counties. We have a fantastic summer ahead with the Championship and we look forward to recognising and applauding the monthly winners of the awards."
