Leinster MHC round-up

May 04, 2009
Kilkenny, Wexford, Laois and Westmeath all enjoyed comfortable victories in Saturday's ESB Leinster MHC games. Parading four of last year's All-Ireland winning side, Kilkenny romped to a 4-18 to 1-8 win over Johnny Pilkington's Offaly at Nowlan Park. The visitors trailed by just four points, 0-7 to 0-11, at half-time, and reduced the gap to two points early in the second half before the Cats cut loose with goals from Ger Aylward, Walter Walsh, James Cassin and Canice Maher. Tom Dempsey's Wexford were surprisingly comfortable winners over Dublin at Parnell Park. The home side trailed by five points at the break, but were back in contention when Oran O Maoleidigh netted two minutes after the restart. But the Dubs couldn't get any closer than two points as Wexford pulled away for a 1-19 to 1-9 victory thanks to points from Craig Doyle and Niall Murphy, and a goal from Ian Byrne. In Navan, Neil Foyle was the star of the show as Laois powered to a 4-11 to 1-11 victory over Meath. The full forward hit 3-5 in an impressive display of marksmanship. One of the highlights of the first period was a point from a sideline cut by Darren King, which helped the visitors to a 3-2 to 0-5 interval lead. Seamus Qualter's Westmeath will face Offaly in the next round following a 3-9 to 2-6 triumph over Carlow at Cusack Park. Barry O'Meara's 1-2 helped the Lake County to a 1-3 to 0-0 lead after 20 minutes and they went on to lead by 1-5 to 0-2 at half-time. A Michael Cantwell goal gave Carlow hope after the restart, but similar scores from Anthony Price and Stephen Boylan for the Lake County put the result beyond doubt.
