Leinster MFC: Wins for Offaly and Wicklow

April 26, 2009
Offaly and Wicklow got their ESB Leinster MFC campaigns back on track with wins over Longford and Carlow respectively in Saturday's losers' group games. A hat-trick of goals from St. Mary's, Edenderry star Anton Sullivan inspired Offaly to an emphatic 4-12 to 1-6 victory over Longford at Pearse Park. The Rhode clubman netted twice in the opening 12 minutes to help Declan McGovern's charges to a 2-5 to 0-3 interval lead. A 50th minute goal from substitute Kyle Fitzpatrick saw Longford narrow the gap to six points, 1-6 to 2-9. However, they failed to score again as Offaly swooped for two goals in the space of a minute from Graham Guilfoyle and Sullivan to seal an easy win. At Aughrim, Wicklow bounced back from their 26-point mauling at the hands of Kildare to beat neighbours Carlow by 2-12 to 1-8. Carlow led by 1-5 to 1-4 at half-time, but the home side never looked back after Tommy Kelly rifled home a penalty in the 36th minute. Carlow suffered another blow when substitute Paddy Tobin was sent off for a second yellow card, and their misery was complete when Niall Humphries, who scored 1-5, sent a penalty wide in the closing stages.
