Ulster U21FC: Magee strikes late for Down

April 02, 2009
A Michael Magee goal eight minutes from the end gave holders Down a dramatic victory over Tyrone in last night's Cadbury Ulster under 21 football semi-final in Newry. Down2-14 Tyrone...1-14 The Mournemen got off to a great start and led 1-3 to 0-1 after eight minutes with their goal coming from senior star Paul McComiskey. But Tyrone were level by the 13th minute thanks to a Jason McAnulla goal, and three points from Shane Mulgrew in the second quarter helped them to a 1-7 to 1-6 interval lead. Two points from McAnulla and one from substitute Gareth Devlin extended the Red Hands' advantage to 1-10 to 1-7 five minutes into the second half. McComiskey replied for Down, only for Tyrone to go four points clear thanks to scores from Mulgrew and Mark McKenna. The home side closed the gap to two points before midfielder Magee took a pass from Jamie O'Reilly and fired to the net to give them the lead for the first time since the 10th minute of the first half. And further scores from McComiskey and Eamon Toner (twice) sealed their place in the final against neighbours Armagh.
