Leinster U21FC: Andrews shines in Dubs win

March 22, 2009
An early Dean Kelly goal helped Dublin on their way to a four-point victory over a disappointing Westmeath side in this Cadbury Leinster under 21 football semi-final at Parnell Park. Dublin1-10 Westmeath..0-9 Kelly capitalised on a dreadful mistake by Westmeath defender Andrew Whitney to hammer home the only goal, and the result was never really in any doubt after that. The home side went on to lead by 1-7 to 0-2 before Westmeath free-taker John Connellan helped reduce the gap to six, 1-8 to 0-5, at half-time. Whereas senior star Paddy Andrews produced a man of the match performance for Dublin from centre back, none of Westmeath's big guns performed to the same level, although they did close the gap in the second half through points from Connellan, Brendan Kelly and Thomas McDaniel. Dublin manager Jim Gavin will be concerned at the fact that his side only managed two second half points, and will know a big improvement will be required against Laois in the Leinster final on April 5.
