March 19, 2009
Crossmaglen's Jamie Clarke scored 1-6 as Armagh edged out Cavan in this Cadbury Ulster under 21 football championship quarter-final at the Athletic Grounds. Armagh..1-11 Cavan.0-12 The Orchard County were full value for their victory, having shot 14 wides to their opponents' five. But despite this and the dominance exerted by Kieran Toner and Stever Harold at midfield, they needed a late fisted point from Shane Carroll to seal the win. After full forward Ray Cullivan had a goal disallowed in the first minute and Robert Maloney-Derham and Declan McKiernan had pointed for the visitors, Armagh pounced for the only legitimate three-pointer five minutes later when Clarke finished to the net. Cavan rallied in the second quarter with points from Eugene Keatin and Cullivan, but Clarke ensured the home side of the lead at half-time. Gearoid McKiernan levelled the match five minutes into the second half and it remained close for the remainder of the half, with Armagh missing two excellent goal chances. The minimum separated the sides as the game moved into injury-time, but Armagh had the final say when Carroll fisted over at the death.
