Ulster U21FC: Down march on

March 19, 2009
A brace of late points from Paul Devlin ensured Down of a hard-earned victory over Fermanagh in last night's Ulster under 21 football championship quarter-final at Enniskillen. Down.2-11 Fermanagh.2-8 The Mournemen were always in the driving seat after Paul McComiskey's goal midway through the first half, but they struggled to see off a plucky Fermanagh side, who had the benefit of a preliminary round win over Monaghan. Scores from Daryl Keenan and Niall McElroy left the Ernesiders trailing by the minimum at the break, but four quick points from Eamon Toner, Paul Delvin (twice) and McComiskey put Down five clear after the restart. Fermanagh, however, refused to lie down and a punched goal from Eoghan Donnelly, followed by a point by Joe O'Brien, left it a one-point game once again. But the home side could never draw level and they fell six points behind when Ben O'Reilly netted. A quick 1-1 from full forward Kevin Connolly left the minimum in it once again with just minutes remaining, but two points from the excellent Devlin saw Down prevail.
