Connacht U21FC: Mayo squeeze home

March 15, 2009
Mayo remain firmly on course for a fourth consecutive Cadbury Connacht U21FC title following a one-point victory over neighbours Galway at Charlestown. Mayo2-6 Galway0-11 While Mayo always enjoy beating their neighbours, the involvement of 11 players with senior experience in the Galway team made this victory all the sweeter. Senior player Mikey Sweeney's opportunist goal in the 22nd minute gave them a 1-4 to 0-4 half-time lead. The home side extended their advantage 12 minutes after the restart when Jason Doherty added a second goal and although Galway rallied in the final quarter with scores from Michael Martin and Fiachra Breathnach, the charges of Pat Holmes and Noel Conneely held on for a deserved victory.
