Ulster U21 FC: Fermanagh over first hurdle

March 12, 2009
Kevin Connolly's goal seven minutes from time proved all-important as Fermanagh edged out Monaghan in their Ulster U21 FC preliminary clash at Emyvale last night. Fermanagh1-7 Monaghan.1-6 Despite leaving it late, Fermanagh were full value for their victory and, but for some wasteful finishing, they would have wrapped it up a lot earlier. Played in difficult conditions under lights, the game looked to be going Monaghan's way when they led 1-6 to 0-3 at half-time, with Darren Bishop getting the goal in the 11th minute. But the visitors took control on the restart and with Tomas Corrigan in fine scoring form, had reduced the margin to three points by the end of the third quarter. Daryl Keenan reduced it further in the 51st minute but Connolly got the goal they had been threatening two minutes later. Monaghan had a couple of chances thereafter to force a replay, but the visitors held on.
