March 01, 2009
Westmeath cruised into the last-four of the Leinster under 21 football championship following an emphatic victory over Kilkenny at Nowlan Park. Westmeath 2-18 Kilkenny 1-2 Eleven-point winners over Offaly in the first round, the Lake County were never troubled by their outclassed opponents. They opened with points from Thomas McDaniel (two), Niall Kilcoyne and Conrad Reilly before Maryland's Kieran Martin blasted the opening goal to give them a 1-4 to 0-1 lead after just 10 minutes. John Connellan, who had been on Sigerson Cup duty with NUIG the previous day, added a second goal before John Mulhall scored a similar score for Kilkenny to leave them trailing 1-2 to 2-8 at half-time. It was all one-way traffic in the second half as the visitors fired over 10 unanswered points to set up a semi-final date with either Dublin or Meath.
