Preseason betting

Ladbrokes GAA man Neil Walsh looks ahead to the National Football Leagues giving some details on how the preseason betting markets have shaped up. NFL Division 1 Tyrone 2/1 Kerry 5/2 Dublin 7/1 Mayo 7/1 Galway 8/1 Derry 8/1 Westmeath 14/1 Donegal 16/1 Each-way bets 1/3 odds first 2 Tyrone have been the best supported team by the punters across all of the divisions since we opened our books on the National Leagues. We have laid them from 10/3 all the way in to 2/1 favourites. They took that mantle from Kerry a few weeks back after we saw relentless backing of Mickey Harte's men to follow up their All Ireland success with further silverware. You have to go back to Meath in 1987 to find reigning All Ireland champions who followed up with a National League Division 1 title so history is against Tyrone but I don't think people will ever make the mistake of writing off this side again! NFL Division 2 Cork 11/4 Armagh 4/1 Meath 4/1 Monaghan 9/2 Wexford 13/2 Kildare 12/1 Laois 12/1 Fermanagh 16/1 Each-way bets 1/3 odds first 2 This is a particularly open and competitive division although it hasn't hugely captured the imagination of the punters yet. Perhaps the uncertainty over how Cork's footballers would react to the drama unfolding for their hurling counterparts has inspired a watching brief for many. What money we have seen has come mainly for Kildare, and we cut them from 20/1 in to 12/1. Armagh have moved in the other direction with no support in the market seeing them drift from 11/4 to 4/1. The absence of the Crossmaglen contingent while they continue their club championship campaign is doubtless a factor in the punters not looking to the Orchard for rich pickings. NFL Division 3 Down 9/4 Cavan 5/1 Offaly 5/1 Limerick 5/1 Louth 6/1 Roscommon 7/1 Longford 9/1 Tipperary 33/1 Each-way bets 1/3 odds first 2 Many of the managerial hot seats in Division 3 are currently being reshaped by a new posterior but the market has plummed for a familiar set of cheeks with Ross Carr's side. Arguably a division below where they should be, the national league was no friend to Down last year, but an Ulster championship win over Tyrone makes the Mournemen the class team in the division. We put them in at the head of market at 11/4 and we've seen that price taken, with further money at 5/2, and now holding at 9/4. There is also a steamer in this market as Roscommon's early season promise under Fergal O'Donnell in the FBD League has seen them backed from 20/1 in to 7/1. With these two sides so well supported, all others have drifted like lonely sheep. A Roscommon v Down final wouldn't be pleasant for us here at The Magic Sign. NFL Division 4 Antrim 5/2 Sligo 5/2 Wicklow 7/2 Leitrim 9/2 Clare 15/2 Carlow 16/1 Waterford 16/1 London 200/1 Kilkenny 250/1 Each-way bets 1/3 odds first 2 We originally installed Antrim as narrow favourites here at 9/4 and we certainly wanted to be on the right side of Liam Bradley's squad, but their dismal showing in the McKenna Cup has put punters off and we've nudged them out in the hope of attracting a bit of interest. Leitrim are responsible for the majority of red in our book here as some of our more astute punters have faith in Mickey Moran's quest to revive the fortunes of the Connacht side. They have moved from 6/1 in to 9/2. Both Carlow and Waterford have drifted from 12/1 out to 16/1 as they have few supporters in the market while Wicklow shortened up a little, 4/1 in to 7/2.
