First half Rout ends Fechins drought

December 01, 2008
Annaghminnon Rovers 0-7 St Fechins 2-10   Two clinical finishes from Niall Devlin helped St Fechins claim their first silverware in nearly ten years against Annaghminnon Rovers in Darver on Sunday afternoon. The Division 4C final was played in near perfect conditions, and it was St Fechins who got off to a perfect start with Devlin grabbing his first goal after just 5 minutes. The south Louth team totally dominated the first half, Rovers simply had no answer to the Fechins pace particularly in attack were Devlin, Ronan Holcroft and Conor Haughney caused problems from start to finish. With 15 minutes gone Devlin grabbed his second goal after some neat work by Andrew Collier. Points from Holcroft (4), Devlin (3), Paul King and Haughney gave the Fechins 2-9 to 0-2 lead at half time. Shane Russell and Tony Martin grabbing Annaghminnon,Äôs scores.   The second half seen Annaghminnon getting to grips with the Fechins pace and started to dominate in terms of possession, Tony Martin and Declan Lambe were particularly prominent winning a lot of possession but could never make it count up front with the Fechins defence giving away very little space and scores. Frees from Shane Russell did put a bit more of respect onto the score-line but in truth the Fechins never looked in trouble after their first half performance. A Colm O'Neill free was the Fechins only score of the second half although substitute David Fox brought a great save out of the Annaghminnon goalkeeper near the end. Seamus Thornton,Äôs final whistle brought an end to the silverware drought at St Fechins, their last success being in 1999.   St Fechins: Paddy McCormack, Tom Sweeney, David Kirwan, David Collier, Paul King (0-1), Vinny Corrigan, Conor Murphy, Anthony Duff, Dermot McConnell, Andrew Collier, Colm O'Neill (0-1), Darren O,ÄôNeill, Conor Haughney (0-1), Ronan Holcroft (0-4), Niall Devlin (2-3).
