Whelehan concentrating on Birr
November 21, 2008
Birr co-manager Pat Joe Whelehan has said that he will not consider the role of becoming the county's next senior manager until after his side's Leinster SHC final against Ballyhale Shamrocks in two weeks time.
Whelehan has managed Offaly's minor hurlers to three All-Ireland titles in the past as well as Limerick's senior hurlers from 2003 to 2005 and despite reported interests, says that he is looking to succeed Jim Greene as the Barrowsiders' next hurling boss.
"I am like anybody. You get a phone call and might ring and ask you a question. There is nothing in it. Not at the moment anyway. I am in a Leinster final in two weeks' time and am getting a team prepared," said Whelehan.
"No-one asked. Would I be interested. Just ring me back after the Leinster final and that was all that was said. I have got six phone calls already over training teams next year and I have said no to all of them.
"I could get six offers before Christmas. That is the way it is when you are involved with training teams. I have a hard two weeks ahead of me and have no interest in anything else at the moment."
Former Kilkenny manager Kevin Fennelly and fellow county man James McGarry are said to be interested in the post, but County Board chairman Pat Deering indicated earlier in the week that no one has been approached for the position as of yet.
"We are looking for the best man available. Someone with plenty of experience, I can guarantee you that," he said.
