Carlow players slam Greene departure
November 21, 2008
The Carlow hurlers have issued a statement accusing their county board of not doing enough to keep Jim Greene on board as manager.
The Waterford native quit his post recently, just months after guiding the Barrowsiders to an historic Christy Ring Cup triumph, after claiming there was "a lack of appreciation for what the players and management had achieved".
The Carlow hurlers have pointed out that Greene had led them to three finals during his one-year tenure, including the final of the Christy Ring Cup which they won after extra-time against Westmeath.
"We would like to point out that he had a very demanding schedule as he had to prepare us to play on six consecutive Saturdays, travelling to Down, Kerry, Mayo and Tullamore in the process," the statement read.
"Jim felt due to the fact that the team was not allowed sufficient time to prepare in a professional manner for the start of the upcoming National League, due to the new directions laid down from Croke Park with regard to training prior to Christmas, that we would not be at the level we needed to be.
"We feel as a panel that enough was not done within the county to keep Jim on board and we felt throughout the year that he had to put up with certain undeserved reservations.
"We hope that the county board will appoint a new manager with a proven track record to take Carlow to the next level."
Birr manager Padjoe Whelahan and former Kilkenny and Dublin boss Kevin Fennelly are just two of the names to have been linked with the vacancy.
