Skelly hits out at AFL raids
November 21, 2008
Leinster Council vice-chairman and ex-Longford chairman Martin Skelly has expressed his concerns about the recruitment of young GAA stars by Aussie Rules clubs.
Skelly's own county were dealt a major blow this week when county minor and Killoe Young Emmets clubman Michael Quinn signed a two-year contract with Essendon.
Skelly has warned that the GAA must act to stop the drain of their best young players to the AFL, and has suggested that providing more regular games may help.
"I would be concerned about the drain of players from the 16-21 age bracket either leaving the game or going to play other sports," he said.
"They are looking for more regular games and a more compact fixture schedule. We're competing on a daily basis with soccer and rugby. There is frustration with the fixture schedule and players want a coordinated plan."
