Wicklow disciplinary cases up 25 per cent

November 20, 2008
The Wicklow Competitions Control Committee had to deal with a record number of disciplinary cases this year, prompting officials in the county to call for greater respect for referees. The number of team mentors and officials being dealt with by the Wicklow CCC is up by 25 per cent with the same increase recorded for players receiving straight red cards. County board secretary Michael Murphy said: "Every year, we ask that respect be shown to referees but this is still being ignored." Fixtures chairman Mick O'Hagan remarked: "Over the year, however, most of our games were played in sporting manner, even though a total of 125 red cards were issued." Hearings Committee chairman Liam McGraynor added: "When players see mentors and parents abusing the referee, they feel they should do the same."
