McCarthy joins Cork management team

November 17, 2008
Teddy McCarthy will be named as one of Gerald McCarthy's two new Cork hurling selectors at tomorrow night's county board meeting. The under-fire Cork boss has had to replace two of this year's management team, Martin Bowen and Donie Collins, who have opted out for the coming season. Bowen has returned to manage his club Erin's Own, while Collins has stepped down for personal reasons. McCarthy's appointment as a selector comes a year after he was named as Cork football selector under Teddy Holland, who never got to manage the team after the players refused to play for him, and was subsequently replaced by Conor Counihan. An All-Ireland hurling and football winner in 1990, it will be the Sarsfields man's first involvement with a Cork team since his illustrious playing career ended. He has, however, been active at club level and was a key member of this year's Sarsfields management team under Bertie Og Murphy. Two members of this year's team, Ger Fitzgerald and John Mortell, have been retained by the Cork manager who is currently seeking a fourth selector. Meanwhile, the Cork team to face a St. Colman's, Fermoy selection next Sunday is expected to be made up of players from county champions Sarsfields, Duhallow and the Glen Rovers under 21 side in the absence of the regular squad members who are refusing to playing under Gerald McCarthy.
