Leinster club SFC: McCormack edges Ógs into last four
November 17, 2008
Éire Óg 0-9
Colmcille 0-8
Éire Óg took their place in the last four of the Leinster Senior Football Club Championship by seeing off Colmcille after extra time in Pearse Park, Longford yesterday afternoon.
Both these sides had played out an absorbing draw in Carlow last weekend and the two finished on 0-7 apiece at the end of normal time again here.
Eric McCormack got the Carlow champions off to the better start in the match by sending over a pair of points in the opening stages before Colmcille hit their purple patch in the game.
On the quarter hour mark Brian Brady raced up from half-back to get Ciarán Brady's men off the mark, which was backed up by singles from a Declan C Reilly free and Tommy Doyle, Brendan McCabe and Anthony Gormley all sending over further points within five minutes to put their side in front.
Éire Óg responded with another brace from the faultless McCormack and a white flag from defender Ber Hennessy to cut the gap down to one at half-time, 0-5 to 0-4.
In the second-half McCormack and Cormac Mullins struck the points that helped Ógs outscored their opponents 0-3 to 0-2 to tie up the game, and in extra time Colmcille could only muster a single point through Reilly, while McCormack sent over a late pair of frees to book his side's provincial semi-final spot.
