Off-season games facing the chop

November 12, 2008
The annual Dubs Stars games, which are scheduled to take place on December 27, are under threat due to the ban on all inter-county activity during the months of November and December. The Naomh Barrog club in Kilbarrack is due to host this year's football and hurling Dubs Stars games, but Croke Park chiefs have now ruled that the matches cannot go ahead on that date. And as Pat Gilroy's new football panel are jetting out to La Manga for a week of pre-season training in early January, it's unclear when an alternative date can be found for the long-running event which pits the best club players in the capital against their county counterparts. Dublin won't be the only county to suffer, with indications that similar tournament games around the country won't be allowed to proceed during the new closed season. And that means that this month's senior hurling clash between Cork and a St. Colman's College, Fermoy selection, which is already under threat due to the ongoing dispute in the Rebel County, will also face the chop.
