Byrne favourite for Dublin hurling post

Former Kilkenny and Tipperary hurler Denis Byrne remains the favourite to succeed Tommy Naughton has Dublin hurling manager. Dublin officials hope to announce a new manager on November 18 and it is looking increasingly likely that Byrne will be handed the task of taking them to the next level. Byrne isn't exactly the high-profile figure Dublin are looking for - both Nicky English and DJ Carey already turned down overtures - but he did captain Kilkenny in their 1999 All-Ireland final defeat to Cork and later caused a stir by transferring his allegiances to Tipperary. The Graigue-Ballycallan man is extremely familiar with the Dublin players, having assisted the previous management with skills sessions.
