Wicklow SHC: O'Neill leads Glenealy towards title

November 09, 2008
Glenealy 2-10 Carnew 0-10 Goals from Enan Glynn and Jonathan O'Neill proved the ultimate difference for Glenealy as they took the Wicklow Senior Hurling Championship title after a replay yesterday in Aughrim. After battling against the breeze for the first half-hour, Glenealy were level at the interval (0-8 to 1-5) thanks to Glynn's well taken goal despite a superb scoring display from Carnew's chief score getter Don Hyland, who registered eight points over the hour. The winners used the wind advantage as best they could on the game's resumption, but couldn't put their opponents away, and with 10 minutes remaining it looked as though they were to pay the price when Sean Kinsella was dragged down in the square and Carnew were awarded a penalty. Hyland was the player who stood over the decisive puck and when he shot O'Neill's stick held firm to deny him the net and maintain Glenealy's one-point lead. Moments after, a 50 metre free from O'Neill fell to the net past Ted Kennedy to open up a five-point lead and at that there was no doubting that the Wicklow hurling crown was to lie with Glenealy for this year.
