Board u-turn as Matthews appointed Louth minor manager

November 07, 2008
Louth County Board has completed a dramatic u-turn by finally appointing Mickey Matthews as Wee County minor manager for 2009. There was uproar in the Wee County when the Oliver Plunketts man was originally overlooked for the post in favour of a proposed interviewing process. Having managed the same crop at U17 level the previous year, many expected Matthews to be automatically appointed. However, when the applications were sought for interviews, he opted not to apply. This led to a stand off and things got messier when the three men who applied for the position all withdrew their interest. Matthews will work in tandem with a three-man selection team of Colm Nally (trainer), Seamus O'Hanlon and Willie Shevlin, with Nally expected to assume the manager's post in 2010.
