Hero's welcome for Glynn
November 06, 2008
Leighton Glynn returned to a hero's welcome in Rathnew on Tuesday morning after his International Rules heroics in Australia.
Hundreds turned out to honour the Wicklow star who made a huge contribution to Ireland's two Test victories over the home nation in Perth and Melbourne. Glynn produced a man of the match performance in the first Test when his six-pointer goal helped Ireland take a slender advantage into the second Test.
Glynn was clearly taken aback by the reception he received on his return to Rathnew where he received a guard of honour from school children from St. Joseph's girls and St. Earnan's boys schools.
Bord na nOg officer Pat Mitchell said: "The kids in particular gave Leighton a hero's welcome home and I must say I was very impressed with the turnout considering that the reception for Leighton was arranged at such short notice.
"The reaction I am getting from kids throughout the county following Leighton's performances in Australia is truly amazing," he added.
Glynn will have little time to dwell on his achievements in Australia as his hurling club Glenealy will renew battle with Carnew in their county final replay on Saturday.
