Nine Kilkenny players on GPA team

November 03, 2008
Unsurprisingly, there are nine Kilkenny players on this year's Opel Gaelic 'Team of the Year' for Hurling for 2008 after Brian Cody's side's All-Ireland SHC three-in-a-row triumph this past year. The Cats dominate the annual selection, with Munster Champions Tipperary (3), All-Ireland finalists Waterford (2) and Cork making up the rest of the team. There are five members of the Kilkenny defenders that make up the six positions in the back line, with Tipperary's Conor O'Mahony the only man to break the Cats' trend throughout the backs. Cork's only All Star this year, Ben O'Connor, receives the number 10 position again here, while John Mullane, who was infamously denied an All Star this year, this time makes the cut at left corner-forward position, while young Galway sensation Joe Canning is left out. B Cummins (Tipperary); M Kavanagh (Kilkenny), N Hickey (Kilkenny), J Tyrell (Kilkenny); T Walsh (Kilkenny), C O'Mahony (Tipperary), JJ Delaney (Kilkenny); S McGrath (Tipperary), J Fitzpatrick (Kilkenny); B O'Connor (Cork), H Shefflin (Kilkenny), E Larkin (Kilkenny); E Brennan (Kilkenny), E Kelly (Waterford), J Mullane (Waterford).
