Ulster Club SFC: McGourty helps St Gall's into last eight

October 20, 2008
St Gall's 0-12 Mayobridge 2-5 Antrim champions St Galls came through a tense encounter with Mayobridge at Newry on Sunday to take their place in the quarter-finals of the Ulster Club Senior Football Championship. After the visitors had endured the worst possible start to the game, by conceding a goal after 22 seconds, they eventually asserted themselves to take in a 0-7 to 1-1 lead at the break. Benny Coulter claimed early possession for the Down kingpins to fed Ronan Sexton with a useful pass that sent him in on goal, which he expertly finished to the back of the net. It was another 13 minutes before St Galls could respond through a Karl Stewart free, but from there they went on to take the lead with two scores from star forward CJ McGourty and another white flag from Kevin Niblock. The winners added on three more singles before Mayobridge could muster their reply two minutes from the interval, which left them trailing by three points after the opening half-hour. Within six minutes of the restart, Coulter had the ball in the back of the net for the Down side and added on another point for good measure moments later to put his side back in front. The 2006 All-Ireland finalists would see out their Mourne opponents' rout however, as CJ McGourty, Niblock and Stewart all came to the fore once more when it mattered to edge out Mayobridge by the minimum, and set up a last eight meeting with Cavan Gaels on Sunday week, November 2.
