Coleman rescues Ballymaguigan

October 10, 2008
1993 All-Ireland winner Gary Coleman scored a long-range injury-time free to earn Ballymaguigan a 0-8 each draw with Greenlough in a mediocre intermediate football final at Celtic Park last weekend. With two minutes of injury-time elapsed, Greenlough conceded a free just outside the '45' metre line. But despite the wet and blustery conditions, the vastly experienced Coleman judged his kick to perfection to earn Ballymaguigan a second bite at the cherry. Ballymaguigan manager Peter Baynes was full of praise for Coleman after his late heroics. "Coleman is the man you want standing over that ball, he's been there and done it so many times. Simply, that's why Gary Coleman is on the pitch, to show his experience and put the ball over the bar," he said. Ballymaguigan made the brighter start, but Greenlough eventually settled down to play some good football and led by 0-5 to 0-3 at half-time. While the sides were level on 0-6 each early in the second half, Greenlough began to dominate but were unable to translate it into scores, and thus Ballymaguigan lived to fight another day. A rueful Greenlough manager Hugh Mulholland admitted: "We just didn't take our scores. We're disappointed, certainly, but that's part and parcel of football, these things happen and you just have to accept it."
