Westmeath SFC: Castledaly end Tyrrellspass' reign
October 06, 2008
Last year's Leinster club finalists Tyrrellspass relinquished their two-year grip on the Westmeath SFC title following a narrow defeat to Castledaly in Saturday's semi-final replay in Athlone.
Castledaly....2-4
Tyrrellspass.0-9
The victory was no more than Castledaly deserved after they were controversially denied a place in the final against south county rivals Garrycastle by David Glennon's late equalising point last weekend. Ironically, Glennon was forced to leave the fray with a hamstring injury after only four minutes on this occasion, while substitute Cathal Daly also departed the scene with an injury just before half-time.
Castledaly, who lost the 2006 county final to Tyrrellspass after a replay, led by 1-3 to 0-4 at the break after Niall Duffy's effort from long range ended up in the champions' net.
Tyrrellspass fought back and Denis Glennon put them ahead with 12 minutes remaining before substitute Tommy Warburton scored Castledaly's second goal. A Glennon free reduced the deficit to the minimum but the winners' defence held firm to reach their fourth final this decade.
