McGilligan: 'County hurlers were treated like second class citizens'
October 03, 2008
Derry U21 hurling boss Brian McGilligan has defended his decision to speak out earlier this summer about the way he perceived the county hurlers were being treated.
McGilligan revealed that his team had to gather together different sets of jerseys to make one full set when they played their U21 semi-final against Tipperary in August.
"The County Board knew that our players would swap their jersyes with the Tipperary lads after the match, so they wouldn't give us a new set," Gilligan explained.
"So we had to get about four or five different sets to make up a full set.
"I felt I was entitled to speak out because the county hurlers were being treated like second class citizens, like not getting their full entitlement of playing gear as is laid down in the guidelines from Croke Park."
