Sambo urges 'vote for hurling' at Congress
October 03, 2008
Terence 'Sambo' McNaughton, joint-manager of the Antrim senior hurling team, has urged the GAA's power-brokers and those "with hurling at heart" to back the bids by Antrim and Galway to gain entry into the 2009 Leinster SHC.
McNaughton says he fails to understand why the likes of Offaly and Wexford have come out against the move and has called on all those with a vote at tomorrow's (Saturday) Special Congress to support Antrim and Galway's wishes.
"We are all at a level trying to make some progress but it is clear to everyone that the present format for the Senior Championship does not work and while I am keeping my fingers crossed that Special Congress approves this, I think it is crucial that Antrim are allowed to take their minors and U21s into Leinster also," said Sambo.
"At the end of the day, this is about the game of hurling. It is about trying to do something to save the game of hurling, to progress and develop more competitive competitions, raise standards."
