Seneschalstown's Emer O'Carroll
Going for a hat trick of All-Ireland 7's shield titles, injuries played a key part as Seneschalstown ladies lost out at the weekend.
On a glorious day in Dublin, Naomh Mearnog, the All-Ireland 7's hosts, became the first Dublin team to win the senior Ladies All-Ireland 7's. Na Fianna also of Dublin won the shield competition.
Seneschalstown Ladies were the sole Meath representatives and had won the All-Ireland 7's shield for the last two years. Seneschalstown were drawn in the toughest group referred to widely on the day as the 'group of death'. Seneschalstown's first game and victory was against high class opposition in Donaghmoyne of Monaghan. Clonee of Wexford caught the Seneschalstown girls on the hop in their second game as the fresher Clonee girls were playing their first match of the day. Seneschalstown then recovered well to play their best football of the day against Inch of Cork, who were runners up in the All-Ireland club championship last year. Going into the final match Seneschalstown had a chance of going into cup and shield but conceding goals against Sarsfields of Laois was ultimately their downfall. Injuries to key players such as Orla Sheridan and Mary Sheridan meant that the final game slipped away from Seneschalstown despite some heroic defending by Deborah Dillon and Mary Sheridan. The margin in the end was only a couple of points and it give Seneschalstown a taster for what lies ahead in the first round of the Leinster championship on the 12th of October in MountMellick.
Other players that showed well on the day were Emer O'Carroll, Grainne Nulty and Fiona Mahon.
Overall for the Seneschalstown Ladies it was a great day out for all the club and supporters. Some new Seneschalstown players got blooded into the 7's scene and the panel for the day was; Amy Carolan, Aonhait McAdam, Emma Harris, Deborah Dillon, Orla Sheridan, Mena Sheridan, Fiona Mahon, Emer O'Carroll, Aoife Sheridan, Mary Sheridan, Grainne Nulty, Stef Byrne.
