Lynch set for Cavan trainer position

October 01, 2008
It has emerged that Niall Lynch is set to become new Cavan boss Tommy Carr's first appointment to the Breffni County's new management backroom team. Lynch managed Virginia College in back to back All-Ireland Vocational Schools senior titles wins in 2006 and 2007 and is expected to assume the role as trainer with the Cavan senior team for next season. "Niall has met with Tommy Carr on a couple of occasions and he sat with him at the games last Sunday," confirmed Cavan county board PRO Mark Gillick. However, Gillick did stress that "nothing has been confirmed yet", but with Carr's backroom staff possibly being confirmed as early as next week the Cuchullains clubman's position as trainer looks to be all but sealed. Meanwhile, former Cavan stalwart Peter Reilly has emerged as one of the favorites to join Carr's management as a team selector. Reilly took part in a similar role with Terry Hyland's Cavan junior side last year along side Martin Lynch, and would surely be a popular choice among the Breffni contingent given his years of loyal service in the blue jersey. "The job of appointing selectors is being looked at closely at the moment and there should be progress within the next week," revealed Gillick. "Tommy Carr's requirement was that, if possible, the selectors should come from within the county and would be strong individuals who would be able to put their point across. "The Management Committee of the county board will propose a couple of selectors and it will be the manager's choice in the end as to who he takes." Along with Reilly, Gowna native Ciaran Brady is an expected candidate after leading Colmcille to their first Longford SFC title in 50 years, despite having to watch from the stands last Saturday at Pearse Park after picking up a touch-line suspension in the semi-final win over Killoe.
