Antrim chairman in plea for Leinster move
October 01, 2008
Antrim chairman Dr John McSparran has pleaded with county boards to vote in favour of the county's entry into the Leinster hurling championship at this weekend's Special Congress.
Delegates from all 32 counties and overseas will assemble in Croke Park at 10.30 on Saturday morning to vote on the proposal to include Antrim and Galway in next year's Leinster championship. And McSparran is calling on delegates to take Antrim out of their current predicament which sees them with little competition in Ulster.
McSparran has challenged those keen to shoot down the new proposals to at least come up with an alternative.
He said: "Saying no isn't enough. This is the only show in town apart from the status quo, which is entirely unacceptable.
"I don't think anyone can defend the current system and although I understand why counties like Wexford and Dublin might have reservations, this has to be given a try.
"This is the only central solution available. No stone has been left unturned in the consultative process.
"No one seems to have the desire to continue with the Ulster championship in its current format and Leinster is no way near as competitive as it once was. You would have to be disappointed Wexford came out against it when they have someone on the Hurling Development Committee."
