Inishowen GAA notes
September 30, 2008
Buncrana
The Buncrana minor team was defeated by a stronger and better-organised Malin team in O'Doherty Park, Carndonagh on Saturday evening.
'Fundamental Football' continues for the seven and eight year olds in Crana College on Friday evenings and for the six year olds on Saturday mornings at 11 am also in Crana College.
The PRO is currently compiling the club's submission for the 2008 Donegal Yearbook. Would all managers please submit team reports to
[email protected] by October 15 at the latest, for inclusion in this year's book.
Pride of place in the club this week goes to the Under-14s who beat Ardara in the semi-final of the All County Championship on Saturday afternoon, played at Windy Hall, home of Errigal College VEC.
From start to finish this was a superb team performance. Buncrana lost the toss and played with the advantage of the wind and rain during the first half and struck first with a point from Darragh O'Connor.
Ardara responded with three points before Buncrana struck back with good play by Peter Mc Laughlin and a goal from Mark O'Connell. Ardara levelled it with a well taken point. Buncrana got two further goals from Peter Mc Laughlin and James Wallace and points from Kevin O'Loughlin and Mark O'Connell to leave the half time score Buncrana 3-3 Ardara 0-4.
In the second half Buncrana got off to a good start with a goal and a point to go twelve points ahead. Ardara were not finished and fought back to within one point of Buncrana with ten minutes to go. In the last five minutes Buncrana dominated the play with James Wallace securing a goal and points from Ryan Curran and Denver Coyle. The game ended Buncrana 5-5 Ardara 2-11
The Buncrana backline played very well with strong support from Connor O'Donnell in goals. The midfield pairing of Kevin O'Loughlin and Kevin Crawford gave their best and over the hour outplayed the Ardara pair.
The Buncrana forward line worked hard throughout the game not only in securing a high scoring tally, but, in tackling back and preventing the Ardara backline from influencing the game.
This is a good U-14 side that under the managing team of Noel Jones and Lawrence Hegarty will be ready to take the first ever U-14 championship title back to Buncrana when they play Cloughaneely next Saturday in O'Donnell Park, Letterkenny at 2pm. The management would welcome support from parents, relatives and friends so Bígí ann ag a dó.
Burt
The Burt Senior Hurlers' challenge to reclaim the County Championship ended after losing to Setanta by 4-7 to 1-7 in Sunday's final. It was heartbreak for the players as they sought to avenge last year's defeat.
Burt started well and got an early goal but they went in at the interval only two points ahead - 1-5 to 1-3 - after Setanta scored a fortuitous goal. In the second half Burt struggled to get going again. However there was just a score in it either way until Setanta grabbed a couple of late goals to win.
All the team can do for now is to regroup and prepare for next year's campaign, knowing they didn't play to their potential in the Final, and get full commitment from everybody. Many thanks to manager Tony McClements for his hard work and commitment to the team and all the club members and officials who helped the team this year. Thanks also to the supporters for their great support before, during and after Sunday's game.
The Club would like to thank Inish Oh! for sponsoring the senior hurling team for the final and supplying them with their Inish Oh! Sports drink.
There was no winner of the lotto jackpot last week. Barry Friel won ?40. The numbers drawn were 4, 7, 6, 2, 1, 3, 5. Next week's jackpot is ?1,100. Anyone with lottos should have them in the clubhouse by Thursday night or hand it to any club member.
The u-10 footballers won the Inishowen blitz on Saturday in Muff. It was the second year in a row they have won the 'A' final. Due to the unavailability of a number of players, we couldn't field a second team and repeat last year's double. But this victory makes a double of another kind when added to the Inishowen u-12 championship.
It was a great day for the young players who all played very well. Thanks to all the parents and club members who helped out on the day.
Thanks also to Naomh Pádraig who worked hard to make the day a success and provided refreshments and tea to children and adults. The team was: Ciaran Bradley, Craig Brogan, Aaron Grant, Josh Arbuckle, Matthew McDermott, Caolan Arbuckle, Demi Arbuckle, Callum Porter, Macauley Carr, Chloe Downey, Katie Sweeney, Eoin Porter, Aaron Doherty, Mark McElhinney and Calvin Gallagher.
The u-16 hurlers beat Carn last Thursday evening in Burt in the League Championship play-off for the semi-final. They now play Setanta or MacCumhaills in the semi-final which is likely to be played this Thursday. Venue to be announced. Training is Wednesday night 6pm.
There is still no word on the u-12 hurling league final against Buncrana. Players and parents will be notified when announced. The Championship will be starting soon also so everyone must attend training. Underage hurling training and camogie training is on Monday evenings from 6pm to 7.30pm. Please remember to bring helmet, equipment etc. Reminder for underage players that membership is now overdue, ?10 per child.
There was no u-13 football match this week in Inishowen or the Northern Board. On Saturday we are away to Glenswilly in the Northern Board league. Throw-in is 11.30pm. Victory against Glenswilly will guarantee Burt as league winners and will move into the semi-final. Training may take place next Sunday for a brief session and players will be let known midweek.
Carndonagh
In preparation for the Junior A Championship final on the 12 October, the seniors played a friendly fixture against Eoghain Rua Ui Neill, Leckpatrick, County Tyrone. Training continues on Monday and Thursday evenings.
Club colours, flags and car flags for supporters will be available in the clubrooms on Thursday 2 October at 9pm and also at the Friday evening hurling.
U14 County Championship Semi-final, Division 2
Carn 4.22 Naomh Columba 0.02
This semi final was played at Convoy,
The Carn lads were quick to settle into their task and soon took control in what was to become a one sided affair. Long range scores from Team Captain Conor Fagan and Liam Coyle soon had the lads from Glen pegged back where Carn wanted the game played.
Up front Conor Doherty (E), Danny Monagle and Gavin Monagle contest well and once they found their range began to make life difficult for the Glen defence.
Ryan McLaughlin was in his usual 110% form around the middle and found his attacks regularly with some well placed balls
Best for the Carn defense was Brendan Monagle who stayed focused and released his wingers on a number of occasions. Subs used for Carn were particularly impressive, with Conor Mathews, often a corner back showing well in attack, along with Mark White who seems to have made a habit of finding the net on the big occasion.
That result leaves the Carn lads back in a County Final, where they will meet Naomh Mhuire, a match the Carn lads will have a particular interest in!
The Carn team were
Fergal Doherty; Brendan Monagle, Conor McDonough, Cian Diver, Patrick Mathews, Kieran O'Callaghan, Ciaran McLaughlin, Conor Fagan (Copt), Ryan McLaughlin, Fionn McLaughlin, Liam Coyle, Conor McCormick, Conor Doherty (e), Danny Monagle, Gavin Monagle, Conor Mathews, Mathew McLaughlin, Mark White, Conor Doherty (s), Christopher Doherty and Caomhan Canny
U13s: Carn were defeated by Urris in the Inishowen u13 competition in Straid on Tuesday evening. Carn travelled with a panel of 34 players and started promisingly enough scoring the first two points. However it was not long before the Urris team began to dominate at midfield and went on to press home this advantage, scoring a number of goals. Urris continued to dominate the game in the second period, while Carn management introduced a number of new players who showed great potential. On Tuesday evening the team are home to Moville, throw in at 6pm.
Hurling:
Underage hurling coaching continues on a Friday night in Pairc Uí Dhochartaigh from 6.45pm to 8.00pm. In order that the underage players i.e U/8 and U/10 boys and girls develop the proper skills we would appeal to anyone who can give an hour of their time on a Friday night to please feel free to join the coaches on a Friday night. The U/12 hurlers played Letterkenny Gaels in the semi final in Buncrana last Thursday evening and have now reached the U/12B County Final. It was an all round great display of skill by the whole panel. The final against McCumhaills game is due to take place this weekend but there may be a clash with the football final.
For details contact Elizabeth Doherty or Catherine Walker. The U/16's played Burt in a play off on the same evening. Despite another good display Burt won the game and Carn will now play Buncrana or Four Masters in the B semi-final. Venue and date to be confirmed. On Sunday next an Ulster Hurling Day will take place in Croke Park for the county U/16 hurling teams. Pádraig Doherty and Dermot McGonagle will represent the club on the Donegal team.
