Mayo SFC: Charlestown book final spot
September 29, 2008
2001 Connacht club winners Charlestown booked their place in the Mayo SFC final with a 1-13 to 1-9 victory over Claremorris.
The dominance enjoyed by Tom Parsons and David Tiernan at midfield proved crucial against a Claremorris side who were left to rue a tally of 11 wides.
The losers made a dream start when Ray Hession goaled after just 30 seconds.
Paul Mulligan and Richard Haran replied with points for Charlestown before they took the lead through an Ollie Conway goal. Tony Mulligan added a brace of points to extend their lead to three before Shane Prendergast pulled back a point to leave Claremorris two adrift at the break, 1-5 to 1-7.
The same margin continued to separate the sides until the closing stages when defenders Enda Casey and Dermot Higgins finally broke Claremorris' resistance with insurance points.
The other semi-final will be played between Crossmolina and the winners of the quarter-final replay between Ballaghadereen and Ballintubber.
