Westmeath SFC: Tyrrellspass force replay
September 29, 2008
Last year's beaten Leinster club finalists Tyrrellspass came within an ace of losing their Westmeath SFC crown when a last-gasp David Glennon point earned them a 2-8 to 0-14 draw with Castledaly in a lively semi-final.
The 'Tidy Town', who are seeking a hat-trick of senior championship successes this year, opened brightly and led by 1-4 to 0-2 after 16 minutes. But Castledaly dominated the remainder of the first half to go into the break on level terms, 1-4 to 0-7.
Castledaly edged into front after the restart but despite playing poorly, Tyrrellspass hung in there and forced a replay thanks to Glennon's dramatic equalising point in the fifth minute of injury-time.
Garrycastle will await the winners in the final after they overcame surprise packets St. Loman's by 1-15 to 2-7 in the other semi-final. Loman's played the better football early on, but the Athlone side had forced their way back onto level terms by half-time, 0-8 to 2-2. Garrycastle dominated the second half to run out comfortable winners.
Meanwhile, Raharney will face All-Ireland intermediate club champions Clonkill in next Sunday's senior hurling final after they defeated St. Oliver Plunkett's by 0-20 to 2-5 in Saturday's semi-final replay.
