Antrim SHC: Ogs land title as Shamrocks out of luck again
September 29, 2008
Cushendall Ruairi Ogs 0-15
Loughgiel Shamrocks 0-6
Cushendall Ruairi Ogs overcame the challenge of Loughgiel Shamrocks with nine points to spare to capture the Antrim Senior Hurling Championship title last Sunday at Casement Park.
In a game that was dominated by strong defending throughout, Cushendall led at the interval by 0-5 to 0-3 at the interval after a penalty from Loughgiel substitute Liam Watson's penalty was saved on 17 minutes.
Joey Scullion raised two of the Shamrocks white flags over the opening half-hour, but Ogs 'keeper Francis McAuley's penalty save off Watson, who had not started after sustaining a broken jaw in the semi-final win over Dunloy, kept his side's lead in tact.
Cushendall struck over five points without reply after the break to establish a seven-point advantage, with Shane McNaughton leading the way, scoring five points from play over the hour.
Both Donal McNaughton and Kevin Elliot continued their brilliant displays in defence for the victor's right up to the hour, with Elliot highlighting his performance by sending over two of the finest scores of the game.
In the final stages, Cushendall were five points clear and continued to stamp their authority by sending over another four to which Loughgiel, who hadn't scores for the opening 18 minutes of the restart, had no reply as the Ogs went on to capture the county SHC by a clear margin, condemning the Shamrocks to a sixth successive final loss.
