Cavan SFC: Gaels into another decider

September 29, 2008
Cavan Gaels 2-15 Ramor United 0-7 Cavan Gaels cruised into yet another county Senior Football Championship final on Sunday night last with an emphatic 14-point win over Ramor United at Kingspan Breffni Park. The defending champions bossed this encounter from start to finish with goals in either half always giving them a cushion after they had raced into the lead in the opening ten minutes. Star forward Sean Johnston and left-footed free-taker Cormac Nelligan's early points were followed up by the influential Nicholas Walsh at full-forward providing a slick pass that cut open the Virginia side's defence and found Anthony Forde, who had thundered forward from wing back and dispatched the ball to the back of the net for a 1-2 to 0-0 at the quarter hour. Stephen Monaghan eventually broke Ramor's drought with a well struck free but it was the Gaels who kept registering the scores coming up to half-time before a late goal chance fell to Anton O'Reilly, but the centre-forward sent his effort just wide of the post. The early stages of the second-half saw the trailers start with good intent, with Monaghan primarily cutting down the deficit from frees won by Ray Cole and Anton O'Reilly. However all their good work would be undone when a well flighted ball towards the Gaels full-forward line was flicked by substitute Niall Murray towards Sean Johnston and the sharp-shooter dummied around the Ramor net-minder and smashed in his side's second major, effectively ending the game as a contest. Shane Cole and Monaghan looked to bring the emphatic score-line down with singles, but the Gaels substitutes in Martin Dunne and Gearoid Collins ensured that the champions would be making their way into this year's decider with comfort, where they will face Denn who overcame Killygarry earlier in the day.
