Second-half haul helps Rories find safety net
September 29, 2008
Belturbet 0-13
Knockbride 1-8
Belturbet Rory O'Moores produced a determined second-half performance at Our Lady of Lourdes Park, Mullahoran last Friday night to ensure their senior status for next year, while relegating Knockbride to intermediate.
In a somewhat lacklustre affair, Knockbride led by a point at the break thanks to former county senior star Larry Reilly's well-placed penalty mid-way through the half.
In the second-half though Belturbet had come to life, and despite the efforts of the superb John Tierney at centre-field for the eventual losers, the forward running of the Rories' half-back line, provided Conor Vaughan, Brendan Fitzpatrick and Jason O'Reilly with the scoring opportunities that would win them the game.
A two-point lead entering the dying stages of the game was a nervous advantage for the victors but they held out, despite the best efforts of Larry Reilly in particular, and ensured they'd be playing senior football for 2009, while dooming Knockbride to relegation back into the intermediate tier once more.
