Punishments proposed for Westmeath brawl clubs
September 26, 2008
The Westmeath county board has recommended a number of fines and suspensions following their investigation into the brawl which marred the recent SFC quarter-final between Tyrrellspass and Mullingar Shamrocks.
Mullingar Shamrocks manager Ned Moore, who captained the town side to a four-in-a-row of SFC successes in the early 1990s, is facing a two-year ban, while a three-month suspension has been proposed for Shamrocks defender Keith Moore.
Both clubs have also been fined heavily for their part in the melee which erupted after Tyrrellspass' inter-county star Martin Flanagan scored a winning goal in injury-time. Mullingar Shamrocks are facing a EUR4,000 fine, while Tyrrellspass, the reigning county champions and Leinster club finalists from last year, are set to be hit with a EUR3,000 fine.
Both clubs have the right to appeal and Mullingar Shamrocks are expected to consider this option. Referee Peter Daly was manhandled during the incident and heated exchanges took place between both sides as the Athlone official left the field at the end of the game.
