Davitts GAA notes
September 26, 2008
The under 16 team won the county division 5 league title on Saturday in Ballinrobe, defeating a gallant Islandeady side 0-10 to 0-5.
Islandeady, playing with the assistance of the breeze, were the better team in the first half, and led by 0-4 to 0-2 at half time. This margin would been greater but for some great defending from Tommy Heneghan and Donnacha Geraghty, and the excellent goalkeeping of David Mitchell. Davitts were a different proposition in the second half, with impressive midfielders Josh Ronayne and Michael Waldron in dominant form, and centre half forward Darren Connolly causing the Islandeady defence all sorts of problems, after having an unusually quiet first half.
The second half dismissal of an Islandeady defender helped Davitts cause, but there was no stopping the Davitts lads, who displayed a great will to win. As well as those players mentioned, Davitts had sterling defenders in Thomas Ruddock, Jason Connolly and Dara Halligan.
Up front, Clive Hennigan, Gerard McWalter, Tommy Waldron and Thomas Clarke worked extremely hard, as did subs James Prendergast, Brian Clarke and Tommy Charles, who was very influencial when introduced. Davitts were deprived of the services of the Ronayne brothers Mark and Donal, who are both injured, but both played their part in getting Davitts to the final. Well done to the team management of Ronan Kirrane, Declan Healy, Tommy Ronayne and John Connolly, who put a big effort into this team.
