Galway anger at Wexford rejection

September 25, 2008
Galway hurling board secretary John Fahy has accused Wexford and Dublin of showing parochialism after they both rejected plans to include Galway and Antrim in next year's Leinster championship. While All-Ireland champions Kilkenny are in favour of the changes, Wexford and Dublin have voted against an expanded Leinster championship, while a number of other counties in the province are expected to follow suit when they debate the issue in the next week. A disappointed Fahy said: "I think that hurling people have to look at this in a broader context and that's what I've been looking at all along." The proposal remains a divisive issue in Galway, but Fahy is very much in favour of the provincial switch. "I'm fully supportive of it. It's the only viable proposition. It's either this or a rehash of some form of open draw, but we can't go into next year with Antrim and Galway in the same situation as last season." Commenting on the perceived parochialism within Wexford and Dublin, Fahy added: "They're maybe looking at Galway taking their place in the pecking order in Leinster. I wouldn't condemn them for that and I can appreciate their position, but the problem is that everybody has a vested interest."
